oh yeh
Now I'm Artsy Wordy and Dorky

Such Great Heights

Okay. I’ve got for you today a funny little thing and a nice piece of philosophy. Let’s start with one of the funny things.

I have been thinking about all these funny slogans for imaginary companies I run. My pharmaceutical company would be, “Casual Drugs Casually, specializing in Valium, Perkacept, and Medicinal Marijuana for teenagers suffering from heavy to mild teenage angst.”

The grounding for this philosophy is that the only way to determine the truth of a feeling or emotion is via the gesture that follows or implies said emotion. For example, saying “I feel sad,” is invalid unless an actual sign of sadness follows. The basic reasoning for this is that people can delude themselves into believing that they feel a certain way and vocalizing it, but acting upon it seems to be harder for the subconscious. Also, it is much easier to say “I feel sad,” than it is to actually be sad. So delusion forces us to not look at what people say, but what people do. Part of our mental ability as humans allows us to realize that our own reality is but a perception of reality. And then reality just becomes the gestures of our perception. So events, time, facts, they only matter if the gestures that commonly occur follow them, because otherwise they are just delusions. Anyway, the basic assumption is there.

Using that logic (which I prove better in this Gatsby essay I am writing), I can prove the love does not exist. In order for love as an emotion to be valid, it needs an action. Society has created these actions, namely, for the religious, sex, and for the rest, marriage. Those actions are suppose to represent the emotion of love. We all know that people have sex for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with an expression of love and that marriage is not love. So where is love’s action? The invalid one is the colloquialism of “I love you.” Simply invalid because it is not an action and just a verbalization of an emotion, declared irrational in the beginning thus not an indicator of a true emotion. The second one, valid, is giving birth. Family interactions are based on love, but that only exists within a family unit; it is evolutionary and not emotional. So love in fact has not action to it and is not a real emotion. People say that love is just semantics, a word for a group of emotions like caring, adoration, respect, attraction, but I don’t buy that either because those emotions are made tangible in different ways than love is said to be. So what I am saying is that love does not exist because there is no action that is done out of anything I would consider to be love. Marriage can happen for 100 different reasons that represent any other emotion. In Romeo and Juliet, the final suicides are considered acts of love, and I’m no pessimist, perhaps in Shakespeare’s mind love exists and he could write of actions representing that, but at the same time, who knows why those idiots killed themselves?

The next funny slogan is for Thewit.net (which is out of commission but still a really good idea I will eventually do again). So The Wit, where a little wit goes a long way. Also there is The Wit, where a little wit goes wee wee wee all the way home.

Goodnight and God Bless. LOL

I have the new Radiohead Album and you don't.
Michal 2003-03-31
I'm going to steal your new radiohead album when you get home and you cant do anything about it!
Adam Holt 2003-03-31
What if love's action were non-action? I am not talking about attraction, desire, caring, respect- I am talking about seeing something for what it is and letting it be as it is. In that there is no action, there is a... surrender, a complete lack of any kind of action. Or perhaps, in this case, what I would call love is truly a matter of semantics, never to be conveyed to anyone. Oh, that makes me sad. How's the new Radiohead album?
Demosthenes 2003-03-31
Avi, back in the sixties, people had these ideas that love was just a construct of society, and ppl thought that everyone was just conditioned to be monogamous, conditioned to attach emotions to sex, so they started these communes where none of this societal conditioning took place. After a while however, people realized that it wasnt true. Things like jealousy and love were actually real and their society started falling apart. why are they real? because it is in out genetic program. it helps us survive. WE have evolved to be a certain way.
Danny 2003-04-01
Hey everyone. Anyway, I think that love is what one might call a semicolonialist abstraction (in the post neo-Kantian sense); at the same time, however, we should be very careful not to fall into the trap of cultural relativism, or mindless, meaningless drivel. Fart. I mean, seriously folks, what is love but a projection, as it were, of our emotional states (our WHOLE emotional states, mind you) onto another, suddenly equally significant Susan? This wasn't my idea, Jesse is home. And I don't think that girl was being interrogated, regardless of what the Agence France Press and their ilk (or cohorts (or Nazi sympathizers)) might say. Happy Birthday, Larry Steinberg. Hope all your birthday dreams come true. Welcome to our fans from the Flatbush JCC. A shout out to our favorite Yankee fan, Jon Byrnes of Montclair, New Jersey. Here's to you, Jon. Leslie, will you marry me? --Morton Will the lucky fan seated in Section 532, row HH, seat 23, please come to the hospitality desk to claim your prize. All prizes nonredeemable outside the contiguous 48 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Thank you. We love you all. Except Avi. Or, as he might say, accept avi.
Avi 2003-04-01
bravo.
Jesse Mermelstein 2003-04-01
Hey, Danny, how you doing? Haven't seen you in months! How's college?
Danny 2003-04-01
Hey Jesse. Thanks for not taking credit for what is possibly the greatest posting of all time. How's Israel? Do you still speak English? Do you have a beard? Because, you know, I had a beard. Those were good times. Anyway, nice to talk to you. And thanks for the cheer, Avi. Bravo to you too.
Jesse Mermelstein 2003-04-01
No, Danny, I don't have a beard. But if I did, let me tell you, the things I'd do...whoosh, it makes me shiver just to think about it. Waterskiing would be one of them. But I probably wouldn't eat much salad. Or silly string, for that matter. In conclusion, I have no beard, and perhaps, as we grow older, we will understand that this too is for the best. Israel's still hanging in there, I suppose. But if they hadn't stopped that Iraqi girl at the border, I don't know where we'd be. Probably Israel, but still, it was a good thing. Ha. The Wit. Avi's still stupid, no? Maybe I'll see you around.
Adam Holt 2003-04-01
I hate to break up the reunion, and I hope it can go on around this little post, but I'd like to interject something back on the whole love front. A question. What is left when all analyzing stops? If you can answer that, you are deluded. If the answer is self evident, perhaps that is love.
Caroline 2003-04-01
so if love doesnt exist what is it that will drive two ppl such as romeo and juliet to die for or drives a mother to give up her life for her children's? you are applying logic to something which is inherently illogical
Avi 2003-04-01
Jesse your stupid. Yeh I'll see you. I was going to send you an email when I saw that you registered for the site today, but then I didn't. Adam I don't understand. Caroline nothing in life is that inherrently illogical and I think everything can be understood rationally even if it seems illogical.
Big Tone 2003-04-01
Avi I have to disagree with you. Love does have physical signs. Here is the best example I can give of them. I was once in love with a girl and then she broke up with me and from then on every time I saw her it felt like I had been kicked in the chest and literally couldn't breathe, I actually started to hyperventilate a few times.
Avi 2003-04-01
See that is an action that represent an emotion. But that emotion isn't love, as in it wasn't love you were feeling; it is humility, shame, loss, guilt perhaps...See what I'm saying?
Adam Holt 2003-04-01
It seems that what you two are talking about is really a matter of semantics, what you are calling love.
Annie 2003-04-01
what we talk about when we talk about love. Avi with your logic of passing the buck with emotions-the breathless fealing isn't love, its loss-you can't define any emotions, becuase every sign of an emotion could be broken down into a different emotion or different sets of emotions. That brings it back to my point which is that you can't truley define any emotion, all you can do is grasp for words someone told you meen what you are feeling. When tony sees his girl, its not that hes guilty, its not that he feels the loss of something material. Its love. I hope all this crap is just you being stupid, because for a self-proclaimed genious, your logic doesn't make any sense.
Danny 2003-04-01
I don't want to break up the reunion, but Annie's probably on the right track. We're just talking about symbols and complex human emotion, and shouldn't get caught uo in the percentages involved for each one. Really, your basic philosophy is too simplistic and universalist, as it were. At the same time, though, the idea of idealized, action-proven emotion, removed and unsymbolic (as far as that can go) is an interesting one, though probably a direct route towards a nihilistic worldview. Just like Annie seems to imply, your thoughts should push beyond "what is love," into the realm of "what is emotion, and how does it relate to the human ability to detach?" I think.
Avi 2003-04-01
You guys are fun. Anyway...I am going to be posting something new tonight so take your last glance at that post.
Avi 2003-04-01
I better post something cause Im so sick of reading these comments.
Jesse Mermelstein 2003-04-02
I wouldn't want to break up the reunion, either. Any reunion. Far be it from me, as they say. But I think Danny's right, Adam Holt has almost got it, Caroline should read up more on the subject, Big Tone is totally in the wrong direction, Annie's sweet but her ideas need more developing, Demosthenes is whiny, Michal should get the Radiohead album and Avi's stupid.
Demosthenes 2003-04-02
im not winey, nor am i whyney. i think that YOU are whiney. JEsse, jesse, jese, jesus, JESUS
Danny 2003-04-02
First of all, I think we should all applaud Avi for getting that new post up all prompt (and such). Also, It's nice to see Zev and Jesse talking again. Petty differences aside, you're both okay people, and that should be enough. Anyway, I'm just posting to tell Jesus how much I agree with his assessment of this"Big Tone" character. Way off the ball, man. Way off the ball. With regards to your labeling Avi as "stupid," I can't disagree much, though I'm sure he would disagree that stupidity even exists, being that most actions taken by so-called "stupid" people are actually just reflections of how "dumb" or "mindless" they are, and do not necessarily speak to a true level of stupidity. At the same time, though, he's probably just stupid.

New post tonight?
Jesse Mermelstein 2003-04-03
Yeah, sure, l'etat cest mois as well. Gee whiz. But, really, cultural differences aside, I'm still right. And I think it's telling how Avi followed up his slogans for imaginary companies with a slogan for The Wit, confirming my belief that, even though I myself have appeared on it (see my work on the hidden connection between cell phones and brain surgery), the Wit has existence about as much as the drug companies.
