Yeh, so I am doing really well. There are three things I want to say in this post. First is about Hedwig and The Angry Inch. I don't know if you guys have seen this, but my friend Elizabeth, whom I haven't spoken to in too long, got an email from me at the height of my anxiety. Basically, I am worried about my work habbits. Grades don't really matter to me, but I want to be able to discipline myself. And I complain about this sooo much, I mean I end almost every post with this complaint. I kept on expecting someone, perhaps a friend, to be able to help me change, make me more studious. Well the truth is, you are the only one capable of changing yourself. No one else can do it. And complaining for the sake of getting help is pointless. That is what Elizabeth said she got from Hedwig, which I really liked. I mean you have to do certain things in life alone, just know that.
Another friend of mine told me she is scared of her new relationship with her boyfriend because it is eventually going to end. Of course, this made me think of Annie Hall. And in telling her what Mr. Allen has to say about relationships, I discovered a new, well not new, but a better way of explaining the meaning. Two themes in the movie are Death and the ending Joke. I always thought the Death theme had to do with Woody's preoccupation with the subject, it was not until today that I realized the signifance. The ending joke, "A guy is telling his therapist that his brother is crazy. He thinks he is a chicken. The therapist responds well, why don't you commit him? The man responds, well we need the eggs." Now I love talking about inevitability. So first, the joke. The joke is saying more than we need relationships. It is saying the all people have to offer eachother is relationships. And even though it is as crazy as us having eggs (how beautifully metaphoric - Woody Allen you are a genius), that is all we can give each other and we need them. Relationships end, that is a given, but that doesn't mean you have to be scared of them, all you have to do is except that the end and know that despite how crazy it seems to embrace something so futile, that is all we can do with life. The clear relationship to the death theme is that, like relationships, life ends, inevitably, and despite how crazy life is, that is all we have and we must accept that, because, well, we need the eggs.
There was one more thing but I can't remember it so instead I will tell you all about Brendan Benson, even if, by doing so, I am making his amazing music less cool, I mean after all, half the cool is the fact that so few people know about it. Oh I remember the thing. But I'll just finish this and save the other thing for a later time. One Mississippi, his album, is amazing. Every song is great, his music is awesome. His voice has the whinny indie thing going - like Doug Martsch of Built To Spill and Steven Malkmus of Pavement. The lyrics are brilliant,
*The summer has come, and with it your face
In my mouth it’s your skin I can taste
I know the way past all of your fear
It’s a song that I sing in your ear
*
It has the non-trite love song quality to it. Perhaps it isn't the best lyrical example ever, but give the album a chance. It is really worth. Well I have to save the world, I will see you all soon.
