Now I'm Artsy Wordy and Dorky

On Being A Badass

Until I fall back asleep on Sunday, November 17, 2002, it is 12pm, Rachel, a high school friend attending Wash U. in St. Louis, visited for the weekend and now left, I thought I would write a daily dose.

Everything has been good. I saw Ani DiFranco and hated the concert. I can’t say I hate her so much, I mean she has her thing that she does pretty well, but in terms of crowed and just having a good time, it isn’t possible. Ani DiFranco has the “Aretha Franklin” affect. She draws in a 96% female audience that enjoys screaming “I love you,” “Sing it sister,” “You go girl,” “Mhhhhm,” and other annoying cat calls. They point at her, implying she is correct or something. They don’t really dance, they just kinda bob and point and shout and mouth lyrics (no one has the self confidence to sing in front of anyone else there). Ani told of her experiences being wheeled around for breaking her toe and such; she really made an effort to connect with the audience, and her sensitive approach had an understandable accuracy, even if it is shooting fish in a barrel. So besides that.

I got a spike put into my left ear lobe. I would put a picture of it up, but no one can seem to take a good picture of it. It is a simple ¼ inch spike that just extends out of my ear. Spikes don’t usually go into peoples lobe, but they did it for me. It is really cool and for now on, I am such a badass. That’s right, me, avi flombaum, indie-rocker-film-buff-great-writer-and-lover-badass is now my official title. I’m a badass. Everything I do now has a tint of bad and a bit of ass. And with this Bad Ass title, I am going to try to plan an indie Bad Ass festival in Madison Wisconsin. Let me see if I can explain.

That’s Bascom hill. My plan is to erect a stage on the top of it, in front of the Lincoln statue. The rest of the hill will be the crowd. There is a lot of room and I think we should be able to put like 2000 if not more people on that hill. The stage would look really cool from the bottom of the hill, elevated and all with Bascom Hall as a backdrop. I would invite like 3-4 headlining Bands, I’m thinking Modest Mouse, Stephen Malkmus, Sonic Youth, and Guided By Voices, plus like 2-3 other smaller bands, maybe the Realistics, Moldy Peaches (maybe they could bring the Strokes), and whatever my friend Harry is playing with. They would start at like 12 and pretty much play all day. We could charge 15-20$ for a ticket, and give the bands like 20% of the door, and 5% to the smaller bands as a bonus. Obviously, the university could fork some dough over to help fund the concert, but we would need a sponsor. I’m thinking Student Advantage. I mean they could set up a booth to sell cards and who knows what else? Maybe we could get more than one sponser. Anyway, that is the indie festival idea. Now that I’ve got this bad ass spike in my ear, I can totally pull this off. I mean after all, I’m one bad ass mofo.

My 10,000th Unique Visitor Per A Day has just visited this site. I have been up for 298 days and have had a total of 10,000 Unique People come to the site. Congratulations to 24.45.83.19, an optimum online cable user from NY, who was the 10,000th visitor to the site. If you email me and I can test to see if that is in fact you, I will send you a Flombaum Dot Com TShirt. The 9999th visitor, so everyone should know, was Fritz. Too bad you missed the mark.

Avi, now the only thing you have to figure out for it is how to get 2000 college students in Wisconsin who listen to that crap to attend the concert... Where in Wisconsin would you find two thousand college kids who listen to indie rock????
Avi 2002-11-17
Oh Cmon, there are definetly 2000 people who would come to see this festival.

I don't know, how many people live in the towers??

I've met plenty Mid-Westerners who aren't obsessed with football, wresteling, farming, trucks, guns, or muscles and enjoy indie-rock. Not everyone loves 80 glamrock/hairbands like Poison, Bon Jovi, The Scorpions. Not everyone is just like you.

I know, it's unfortunate...

I bet you'd get a bunch of people to drive up from the Chicago metropolitan area to see that show. Also don't forget that midwesterners like mullets and knives. Cause, I mean, mullets are the best.

Wow, Avi. First of all this is one of the first times I have visited your site--to see your famous photo collection (the sad dog is my fav!)-- but I have to say it won't be the last. I read your journal entry today and I found myself compelled to read the 'daily dose' for the last TWO months! I don't think you have to worry about being unsuccessful as a writer, your talent has already determined your fate.

For the record, if I werent something like 8000 miles away, I would come. However, I also really love 80s hair bands - if you get one of those shows goin, I think I'd actually book a flight. Just something to think about...
