This morning. Hmm, morning is a funny word for me right now because I've been up all night. It is 7am now, so yeh, this morning, I did a lot of thinking about how lucky I am to have found two things that I love and that I am good at. I love film and I love writing. The more I think about what I mean by loving these things, well the point is that I think there is something to be said about finding what you love to do, so I am going to say it.
Max Fischer answers Mr. Blooms enigmatic question of "What's the secret Max?" with "The secret, well I think you've got to find something you love and do it for as long as you can." - Rushmore. I remember when I was younger, maybe sixth grade, I loved playing this card game called Magic Cards. I guess they were the dungeon and dragons of a later day. I loved playing them. I stayed up late at night memorizing all the cards in the game. My annoyingly perfect neighboor would quiz me on the cards, trying to dismount my claims of knowing every single card in the game. But I knew them all. I would sit in class and plan out games and decks, just from my memory of the cards. I sat around on my free time organizing my collection and such. This all sounds obssesive, but I loved playing Magic Cards. At that time in my life I was sure I wanted to play Magic Cards for the rest of my life and then work for Wizards of the Coast in Game Development. I looked at the tournament prizes, and the articles written by the pros, that was what I wanted from life. Of course, my parent debunked that habbit by taking all my cards away from me at the start of seventh grade. Thinking about this now I realize that I could have made a life out of playing Magic Cards. Granted, it would be somewhat naive, probably fanancially difficult, dorky, but man, I was never happier than I was when I played Magic Cards. And as long as that happiness would continue, yes, I could have done that for as long as I could and been happy. As happy as an investment banker with a million dollars or a movie star with a super model wife. I would have been doing what I loved.
Around eight grade my obsession was professional aggressive rollerblading. Again, I wanted to be a professional skater, I loved skating, I learned everything I could about the sport, I practised for hours after school, I even entered and ASA (amatuer skating asoc.) contest and placed 4th regionally (which is good for a 14 yr old). I loved skating and I could have been happy doing that for the rest of my life.
Now, I can be happy writing for the rest of my life. Really that simple. I love writing. I love it. And it is my belief, probably naive, that doing something you love eventaully turns profitable. Not in a monatery sense, but I mean cmon, you are always content. You are always happy because you have your love. Same goes for film. I could be happy doing anything with film, especially if it involved writing.
So what is it about all this I have to say, besides, that I love film and writing? I want to talk about Ambition. That is the important thing. You have to take these loves and make them into something. You have to work hard and descipline yourself at what you love. You have to be dedicated and ambitious and be ready to come back after every loss with double the last effort, because eventually you will win. Find what you love and make it your life, that is the most important thing I can say to anyone. A close friend of mine says that doing things is the most important thing in your life. Not wasting time and such, but to me, its dedicating yourself to doing what you love, just like Max.
"I have no spur with which to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which leaps upon itself and falls on the other." - Macbeth
Find that thing you love and do it for as long as you can as well as you can, like that you will always be happy. Oh and people are not a substitute for a persuit of love, so don't go thinking that finding your so called soul mate is love.
